West Jefferson, North Carolina

Have you ever heard of West Jefferson, North Carolina?
I hadn't either up until about a month ago. We finally were able to see it last week. It's such a cute little town and we hope to go back many times in the future.
It seems that West Jefferson has the distinction of having the only cheese factory in the southeastern United States, according to Wikipedia.
Mr. Fanatic and I didn't know that until we happened to be driving through.

Here's how the town looks from our dash cam...

Here's the Ashe County Cheese Plant...

They also just happened to have a cheese store. Of course, we had to stop in to see what they had.

AsheCountyCheese.com

We couldn't leave without buying some of this Cajun Cheddar. (and a few others)

...and some local Blackberry Honey...(sorry for the blurriness...still getting used to my smartphone camera)

They also had wine, ice cream and fudge; something for everyone.

I spotted this old theatre and though it was a gorgeous building. I found out later that it's up for sale. It would be a cool place to live...that is, for $600,000.

What a little gem West Jefferson is! I hope if you are ever in this area( about 30 minutes from Boone), that you get a chance to drive though.
What little towns have you discovered on your traveling adventures?

  1. Funny you should post this, and that I should just have a few minutes to read a few blogs! We are in Carlisle, Pa. (no, I had never really heard of it, or been anywhere near here!). But it is in the direct route for us on our way back home to N.C., so we made a reservation at The Carlisle House B&B. What an absolutely charming place!! REally lovely inn....if you happen to be in the area! And tonight we're going to a Belgian restaurant that has rabbit, crepes, 80 kinds of beer, and moules aux frites (one of my personal favorites!). So, yes, you just never know what you're going to discover!!!

  4. We go to that area often, but never to West Jefferson (I think...we drive through so many quaint towns on our travels)...we will definitely make this a stop when we are out that way again! The Cheese Factory looks wonderful.
