New Paint For The Basement Family Room

The basement painting is finished! Well, everything but the outside door is anyway.
We felt the need to lighten things up, as basements, even walkout basements like ours, need all the light they can get. I even put a couple of thin coats of grey on the previously black lanterns to lighten things up.

The basement paint before wasn't too dark, but all that brown just made things, well dark. Everything just blended in.

The new paint looks so much lighter and brighter the minute you open the door to go down to the basement. Previously, the stairwell was pretty dark.

The basement has always been difficult to photograph. Here's a photo taken at night.

Since the trim looked good, we just painted the walls the same color as the upstairs bedroom at the Mountain Cottage.  The color is Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist, although we had Sherwin Williams mix it. The color looks almost white with a hint of grey at the Mountain Cottage (check it out at the link above), but looks much darker in our basement.

This photo shows that its definitely a grey color. I switched out the dark pillows with these lighter grey pillow covers.

The ceiling is painted the same color, which made cutting in a lot easier.

Our daughter's boyfriend Blake did the cutting in for Mr. DIY, which saved him at least a days worth of work. Thanks Blake!

I still may stage the room with a few more accessories.

Mr. DIY finished the first coat on the outside doors and is off to get more trim paint as I write this.
We'll be able to check this room off the list today and move on to the next project on the "get the house ready to sell list".

Hope you're having a good week!

  1. Looks great Pam! I can't cut in while doing painting at all. Too unsteady. I can see that the wall color is grey in the one shot. Such a pretty home- I hate to see you sell but I understand.

  4. For the basement, I personally prefer something simple and clean. This is to prevent the storage area from feeling and looking cluttered especially when there are many items lying around the place.
