How To Make A Stenciled Burlap Canvas & A Fun Event!

 Now here's the "How To"

I spent a couple of hours in Michaels picking out my supplies. 

Don't know about you, but I can't help picking up a few things whenever I'm there. 

Ribbons, markers and cake supplies are my downfall. Come to think of it, I like the aisle with the craft punches and stamps too. Here are a few things I picked up for the crafts I made.

The first project I made was super easy and is one that anyone can make. Michael's makes it really easy with their stretched burlap canvases. They are available in an array of different sizes. The one I picked had 3 canvases, so I made two and will demonstrate one on Sunday.

The first thing I did was to do a mock up of where I wanted the flowers to go. I used a Martha Stewart stencil and some cardstock. After stenciling, I cut out the flowers and placed them where I wanted them to go on the burlap canvas.

There wasn't a stem in the stencil kit, so I made my own using a piece of cardstock and some tape.

I removed the first mock up flower and taped down the stencil where I wanted it to go. Notice I taped all around the stencil so I wouldn't paint through the other flower stencils.

I'm not really proficient at stenciling, but I did figure out that paint on the foam dauber needed to be blotted on some paper before putting it to the stencil. 

Practice makes more perfect  applies in stenciling.

After painting the 3 flowers and stems and letting it dry, I cut 40" of ribbon. The actual color is closer to Radiant Orchid, which is Pantone's color of the year for 2014.

I tied a knot in the center of the cut ribbon, then tied a bow.

The bow has to be tied tightly.

Once the bow was tied, I hot glued the end to the back at the top corners of the canvas.

Voila! The finished project! The whole craft should take you 30 minutes or less.

1 artists burlap canvas
Martha Stewart stencil
cellophane tape
wide satin ribbon
glue gun and stick
white craft paint
small foam paint daubers

Tomorrow I will show you how I made the super simple ampersand  sign on another burlap canvas. I'm sure you can guess, but just humor me!

No Cost Stencil Project

Happy Monday everyone!

Hope y'all had a great weekend. 

We spent Saturday working on organizing the basement. It still needs a lot of work, but the storage room is almost finished. Just scroll down to the previous post if you missed it.

Was hoping to get my new project finished this weekend, but  it morphed into something a little more complicated. 

Don't you hate it when that happens?

 Ever since we had the house painted, the sidelight windows near the front door have been, well, naked....

...and you can see in the Family Room when you are standing on the front porch. 

Don't know about you, but Mr. Fanatic and I have a thing about that. Maybe it's just us, but we like a little more privacy than that. 

Which brings me to my no cost project...

A few months ago, I purchased 2 sets of curtain panels for my Master Bedroom from Ikea. Since the 3 windows in that room are narrow and the curtain panels are wide, I only needed one panel for each window. That left me with one curtain panel left over. I thought the sidelights would look a little more dramatic covered with the leftover curtain.

A super easy project: cut the panel in half lengthwise and sew the edge. 

Or so I thought. Once up,  they needed a little something and remembered the trellis pattern stencil. Of course I have some extra paint hanging around too.

Thought I'd show you of  the two stencil projects that were done for my daughter's room. 
The first project turned is a stenciled burlap jewelry organizer and matching bulletin board. You can see the tutorial HERE.
 Believe it or not, her stenciled jewelry organizer looks just as organized today as it did when I took this photo. (wish her room did, as well)

The second stenciled project was a pillow. This was also a no cost project.

I stenciled some burlap and made her a pillow, as well. Note to self...next time stencil on prewashed drop cloth fabric or soft cotton...

it's much cuddlier.

I'm excited to get to use this stencil another time because it's so pretty. I'm also happy that this project will cost zero, zip nada...

Now I just have to come up with a no cost way to hang the panels on the sidelights.

Stenciled Jewelry Organizer & A Giveaway!

I'm so glad to be revealing the project we've been working on for some time now. It's not that this project was a big one or that I've been procrastinating....I just worked on it little by little.

Cutting Edge sent me this fabulous stencil several months ago, 

along with a foam roller, a clip on level, a bonus mini stencil and some very helpful instructions.

They also have a great "how to" Youtube video.

I wanted to make a stencilled  jewelry organizer and bulletin board for my youngest daughter's room. The hooks in her closet weren't working for her.

Here's a reminder of what my daughter's room looks like.

I started with a plain bulletin board (on left) and a piece of plywood cut to match.

Here's how the jewelry organizer turned out...

...and the bulletin board...

The bulletin board and jewelry organizer are hung on a narrow wall to the right of her closet.

We used drawer pulls to hang earrings on and cabinet knobs for bracelets and necklaces.

My daughter really loved how it turned out. : )
