My mom always used to say that necessity is the mother of invention. It's so true in this case.
I looked for at least 2 months for a basket for our daughter's room. I looked at Marshall's, HomeGoods, Ikea, TJ Maxx, Target, but didn't have any luck. None of the baskets were the right size.
As I was walking out of Trader Joe's, I picked up an empty wine box and brought it home. It was the perfect size.
I thought it would look good wrapped in jute just like the vase I showed you a few weeks ago.
First, the box was cut down a bit.
Then, the jute was hot glued on.
At this point I was wishing I had wrapped it in burlap! I took a break at this point and made an insert from some left over fabric from another drop cloth project..
Will have to show you where it's going another time.
Now off to Hobby Lobby to to get more jute to wrap yet another box.

ReplyDeleteGreat idea! You can also get jute from Home Depot. It may be less expensive and in larger quantities than your craft store. Just a suggestion...

Regarding the lining, it's pretty easy. You measure the inside of the box, (bottom, 2 short sides and 2 long sides; then add seam allowances of 1/2 inch. For all sides add a couple of inches more so the liner folds over the top. That's it!

ReplyDeleteThanks for this awesome idea! but I used colored twine from the dollar store, lined with alphabet designed cloth and I got organizers for my 2 year old... i can definitely do this all day I spent about $2 for a small basket, its basically a small shipping box. We are online shoppers and most of the time I hoard the sturdy boxes. This idea is perfect, at least i will have a use for those boxes. Yay!

DeleteDoesn't anybody read a blog or do they just look at the pictures?! Approximately a half dozen people requested instructions to make the liner. The link to the instructions is in bold red letters between the blog text and the comments. Good grief that's annoying!!!

ReplyDeleteGreat idea!! When hot glueing the twine/sissel etc...do you have to put the hot glue on the underside of every inch of the rope? Or just here and there? Never used a glue gun..thanks
ReplyDeleteI believe I hot glued the box, then applied the rope. Every inch of rope needs to be glued, otherwise, it may come off. It takes a long time to do a whole box.
