Mountain Cottage Dining Area Before & After

*this post contains affiliate links...

Hello friends!

This little corner dining area at our Mountain Cottage has come a long, long way.
It may be pretty now, all dressed in cottage and farmhouse accessories, but it didn’t always look so nice.

When we first started the kitchen reno at our mountain cottage the walls were covered in 1980’s cream and cornflower blue wallpaper.
That was a joy to remove…NOT!

Lovely, wasn’t it?

So after wallpaper removal, paint, new barn lights installed, plank ceiling put up, banquette (with storage) built,  seat cushions nd pillows made, curtains hung and accessories arranged...
...here’s the finished dining corner.

I made 4 more white pillow covers and Mr. DIY hung all the  tchotchkes on the barn light wall.

We're making do with the table we purchased when we were first married 30+ years ago until Mr. DIY can squeeze in a few weekends to build a custom table.
This table has been with us through thick and thin.
It was our first dining table in a house we rented, then it was used in our first house until we bought a formal dining room table.

At that point, we brought it out for parties  and many family gatherings. We brought it with us when we moved from California to North Carolina where it was stored in our basement and used as a serving table for parties.
When we bought our mountain cottage, we again needed a dining table, so we thought of the table in our basement. It was the perfects size for the kitchen dining area.

We'll use this great little expandable table until Mr. DIY has time to build us a new one.

We still have a few minor items on the punch list in the kitchen and when that’s finished, I’ll show you the whole kitchen reno from start to finish.

For this corner, you can see how we built the banquette HERE.
For information on the accessories that I told you about last time, you can go HERE.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  1. Darling as usual, Pam! And I expect nothing less! :)

    How have you been feeling?

Have you ever painted over wallpaper? Our bathroom has 80's era shades of mauve paper and like my dining room, the builders probably didn't prime the walls before hanging the paper. It's securely attached to the wall. I'm thinking I should use a paint primer first. What do you think?

Although I don't comment very often, I enjoy your blog.

    1. I haven't painted over wallpaper. We used a steamer to remove it and it took a good weekend.
As for how I'm feeling, ugh. It's been rough since after Thanksgiving last year. I believe I was much better from lyme, but after we moved I crashed and had different symptoms. I didn't feel better after a couple of months and then pursued getting my amalgam/silver fillings out, (amalgam are 50% mercury). I felt better for a couple of months, then started what is called a "dump", which can last from 6 months to 2 years. I'm at month 9, so I have a ways to go. I knew this year would be tough, but I had no idea! Thanks so much for asking and especially for commenting!

  2. You have so many good ideas and it’s been fun seeing all this come together. Love the banquette- the pillows look wonderful and add a lot of design. I see your comment above about your health. I didn’t realize you were having some other issues. I hope you get to feeling better soon!

    1. Thanks for the nice comment Liz. Yes. lots of health issues this year. This is probably more than you want to know, but those with mercury toxicity have different symptoms, depending on where the damage is. My symptoms are those listed on the MS website. Those symptoms are common with both lyme and mercury toxicity, so we shall see. I should update my lyme blog soon, but of course, saying you've overcome it is so much easier to write than when you're in the middle of it.

  3. I love what you've been doing at your cottage...hard work but exciting as well! Its good to document it, isn't it?

I read your response to the above comment. I realize that I hadn't thought about what you've gone through and are going through, and I apologize for that. I'm sending a huge hug and I'll keep you in my prayers.
