DIY Custom Spice Cabinet Shelf

Don't you love little projects that you can make from leftover wood from other projects,  cost nothing, only take  an hour or so from start to finish and make your life easier?
I know I do!

This would be a great, expensive project even if you have to purchase a few pieces of wood from your local hardware store.

I organize my savory and baking spices on separate shelves.
This project is for my savory spices.

After clearing out the savory spice shelf, Mr. DIY took some measurements.

I  planned to put 2 large clear Command Caddies on the door to organize the spices even more and to have 2 rows of spice bottles inside the cabinet.
The space in front of the shelf had to accommodate one row of spices plus the depth of a Command caddy with the door closed.

Depth of cabinet - depth of spice bottle - depth of large Command Caddy - a little wiggle room = depth of shelf...
In our case - 6 3/4"
I hope that makes sense...it will at the end.

Mr. DIY had a leftover  1 x 8 piece of poplar  that was ripped to 6 3/4", which was perfect for the depth of our spice shelf.
He cut that piece to the width of the inside of our cabinet, which is 19 1/2" wide.

Then, he cut two 1 x 2s to 19 1/2"

Next, Mr. DIY pre drilled/countersunk the holes.

The finished shelf is 2 1/2" high x 6 3/4" deep.
Mr. DIY screwed the shelf together, but since the width is so snug, he took the pieces apart...

...and screwed the shelf together inside the cabinet.

There are two rows of spices on the shelf. The very back row is where I put a backup jar of something or a spice we rarely use.
The front row on the shelf are spices I use more often.

The spices in the front row (not on the shelf) are spices I use the most.
You can see that I moved some of the spices up because they are used more often.

The spices we use most are on the door in the large Command Caddy.

Here's how my the savory spice section of my spice cabinet looks now.

Now, on to organize the baking spice shelf!

  1. I just love this idea! I live in a condo and am looking for inexpensive ideas to update and make use of the space I have so we can put it on the market in about 1 1/2 years and this fits the bill.
Beauty about this project is you can make it smaller or larger.
