Christmas In The Breakfast Room Favorites

Setting a pretty table in the Breakfast Room or Breakfast Nook is an easy thing to do and it's been my favorite place to decorate over the years. 
Our last house was especially wonderful to decorate because it had 3 angled windows with a view of the woods outside.

I loved hanging a wreath in each window, with a ribbon as a hanger.

My ruby red glasses are ALWAYS displayed on the Breakfast table every Christmas season. 

Can you tell they're my favorite?

I think they go with any Christmas color choices.

Here's the Christmas Breakfast Room last year. Lots of red and plaid! And, of course, my ruby red glasses. 

The table in our Breakfast Room will be set next week and I can't wait. Not sure how I'll decorate it, but I know for sure, that the ruby red glasses will be perfect, however it is set.

Christmas In The Breakfast Room 2016

Mad about plaid continues in the Breakfast Room this year.

I couldn't help myself

I'm just in love with a good Tartan plaid...just about every single one.

I found the Tartan plaid placemats at where else? HomeGoods! Everything else (except the ribbon) on the table was pulled from around the house. I purchased the plaid ribbon on the little tree at an obscure website I came upon. I'll list sources at the end of the post. 

We gave the salad plates to Mr. DIY's mom one year for Christmas, and she gave them back to us when she was downsizing to assisted living several years ago. I'm glad I have them to remember her by.

Mr. DIY moved the artwork from the Dining Room. I hope it will go with the shade of blue/grey that we choose to paint the walls sometime next year.  

Aren't there certain decorations you love getting out every year? For some reason, those snowmen salt and pepper shakers always make me smile.

Fall In The Breakfast Room

The first room I start to  decorate for a season is our Breakfast Room. It's an easy room to decorate; I just start by setting the table.

January In The Breakfast Room

Those of you who stop by often know that my 

Breakfast Room is my favorite room to keep pretty. 

I use a simple formula of:

neutral paint on the walls

simple white curtains

 and a set table with some color. 

Nothing fancy and super simple. 

Yesterday, I made a trip to HomeGoods and couldn't resist buying a few things for my favorite room to decorate. 

I most often use a white or solid color tablecloth, but I thought this pattern was pretty. I couldn't resist buying the matching napkins, as well. 
Not sure if I'm going to use them as napkins or make a couple of throw pillows for the sofa in the adjoining Family Room. They would look great on my grey sofa. 

An inexpensive way to have different ways to change up  a table without spending a lot of money is to buy several sets of pretty salad plates and pair them with some plain white dishes.
Everyone should have one set of plain white dishes. They go with everything. 

These salad plates were $3.99 each. 

The gray placemats were only $4.99 for a set of 4, so I purchased a set in cream, as well. 

I pulled accessories from around the house for the centerpiece. 

Tonight we are having chicken soup and will be serving it in the soup toureen that my mother in law gave me. 

The tablecloth may be a little busy for some(even I think it is), so I plan to look for a white table topper or make one that shows off about 8" of  pattern all the way around the side of the table.

Keep Your Breakfast Room Pretty

Hey Everyone! Hope you all are having a great  day and are doing something creative. You know that being creative doesn't have to be painting or making something...it could just be doing something you haven't done before or improvising something you usually do. My mom used to say necessity is the mother of invention and inventing a new way of doing something is definitely creative. That's my thought for the day...now on to a little update.

First off, I wanted to give you an update on the hydrangeas I've been propagating.

As you might recall, I started a few cuttings back in June; you can see that post  HERE.I put four cuttings in our Breakfast window and hoped for the best. I used seltzer bottles (cut in half) to make little greenhouses. I tried to keep them watered, but you know how that goes, don't you?

 

Of course, I let two of them dry out and they died. That's why you always plant more than you need!

I'm happy to tell you that the cuttings have grown new leaves and are establishing roots...

I'm so excited!

I've read that you can make cuttings up until October and I might just go take a few more cuttings because I love hydrangeas, don't you?

I wanted to share a little find I'm thrilled with. Can't remember how much it cost, but you know it was cheap because I don't like to spend a lot of money. Found it at HomeGoods, of course. It's a simple painted cloth rug and of course, it's washable. Plus, the colors are my favorite...blue and green. This little addition adds a little more prettiness to the room.

It looks great in my Breakfast Room. And yes, I keep my table set like this all the time. I just re-set the table after dinner at night. It's simple things like this that help keep our Breakfast Room pretty.

I know you've seen this place setting before, but it's my favorite. Fall will be here before you know it and the table will be changing up very soon.

Couldn't wait for Fall and made some healthy pumpkin muffins that taste good  even though they don't have any sugar,  are low fat and made with whole wheat pastry flour. I'm so proud of myself because I created this recipe myself and y'all know that I don't cook much!

You'll have to wait for the recipe another time...Sorry about that! Will explain later.

Fading Hydrangeas

My jute wrapped glass vase filled with fresh hydrangeas has been making the rounds...You first saw it on a shelf in my daughter's bookcase, then outside on the little painted table on the basement patio. Now, it looks great on the dining table in our Breakfast Room.

Do you want to know a secret? Until a year or so ago, I really didn't like my Breakfast Room. I didn't care for my breakfast table and chairs either. A different color paint on the wall, some inexpensive Ikea curtains and a round table found on Craigslist that replaced a too large rectangular table made all the difference in the world. I even like my chairs now.

This blue and green tablesetting is one of my favorites. You've seen it before awhile back.

Thought I'd throw in a photo of the french baguettes that Mr. Fanatic made last night. As you might imagine, there's not a lot leftover.

Just an FYI...the hydrangeas are real. They are from my neighbor's yard and they have faded to a beautiful green and light blue. A few weeks ago the flowers on the plants were  a gorgeous shade of blue.

Wooden Crates For The Breakfast Room

Hope ya'll had a fantastic weekend! 

Has it been hot where you are? The weather has been really HOT here in the Charlotte area. It feels like the end of July! It's been so hot my newly planted flowers have to be watered morning and evening. So far they're doing well.

You've probably seen these wooden herb crates before around blogland,

I couldn't resist buying them and thought they'd look great in our Breakfast Room.

The little wall to the left  of our pantry was the perfect spot to hang them.

Faux flowers in the top box, gorgeous hydrangeas from our neighbor's garden in the middle and the third box holds napkins.

They certainly add a little color to the room and go well with our cherry kitchen cabinets. 

Parsley, sage, rosemary and...

Thyme...

The largest box holds magazines and sits on the floor in front of the windows.

Today the painters are going to be prepping our Family Room, Foyer and two hallways and getting ready them ready to paint. I'm so excited to finally get this done. 

Painting, of course, will create a domino effect of projects, as one thing always leads to another.

An Unset Breakfast Table

Isn't it great when you make a few inexpensive changes to one of your rooms and the changes make you smile every time you enter the space? 

That's how I feel about our Breakfast Room. Fresh paint, a table off Craigslist, inexpensive Ikea  curtains and a no cost diy sign all contribute to the new look. Decorating on a dime makes me happy, especially when it all comes together beautifully.

 To make the room look pretty, I kept the table set at all times. I started doing this after we put our house up for sale over a year ago. The breakfast table always looked so pretty. Problem is...nobody  would sit at the table. Everyone would end up at the bar instead.

I finally unset the table leaving only the centerpiece, candles, placemats and napkins. It still looks set, but it's much more user friendly since you  can bring your plate of food over and sit down without clearing anything off.

 Just had to show you my one Ikea purchase I brought back from my trip to SoCal. I found these round braided placemats that look great on top of   rectangular matellase placemats turned vertically.

The burlap wrapped votives look great with the added texture on the table.

I'm loving the new unset look...and now no one is afraid to sit there. Before, they didn't want to mess up my pretty table.

Christmas In The Breakfast Room

There are two rooms in our home that  turned out better than I planned and I'm lovin' the way they look all decked out for Christmas.  Our Foyer is one space that has never looked better...

our breakfast room is the other.  I've been spending a lot of time lately in the kitchen and  the breakfast room and this is what I look at while baking and cooking Christmas goodies:

I ordered the wreaths from Home Decorators.

All of the other Christmas decorations were things we already had.

I love whenever I get a chance to bring out my ruby red glasses that we've had for many years. I think I first saw similar ones on the cover of a Southern Living December issue many years ago.

We've been busy this weekend finishing up the baking and getting the last shipments ready to drop off at the post office and of course, going to a few Christmas gatherings.
