Youngest Daughter's Bedroom

Hello Friends!

Yesterday was the final photoshoot of our youngest daughter's bedroom.

She'll be packing up the last of her things and moving into her own apartment this week about 30 minutes away.

Sniff.sniff.

This means we will have an empty nest; back to being just the two of us. It's been a quick/long 25 years. (our oldest just turned 25 and our youngest will turn 24 in a few months)

Our daughter's room was the first room painted...She and Mr. DIY wasted no time and started painting the day we moved in. The paint was still wet as the movers were bringing in the furniture!

If you remember, our daughter's bedroom was very similar to her bedroom at our last house. The windows are different and her current room is a little larger. If you'd like to see her room at our last house (post was before we found the Craigslist bookcases) , you can find that post HERE.

Lattice Stenciled Pillow

Last month while creating the  jewelry organizer for our daughter, I knew  I had
to make  something else with the beautiful trellis stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils. There was leftover paint and burlap fabric so I stenciled an extra piece and set it on my work table to use at a later date.

Here's the jewelry organizer in case you missed it.

On a side note, I found a taller little "dress form" at HomeGoods and couldn't resist bringing it home for her.

 Anyway...
Our daughter had this cute pillow that I embellished with some fabric flowers, but I though it would be fun to change up the pillow cover.

Yesterday, I finally had a little time to sew the pillow while my daughter was at work. Her new pillow was waiting for her in her room when she arrived home.
She must have really liked it because she wrote this on her facebook status: "I love coming home to new stuff in my room :) #LoveYouMom http://instagr.am/p/NPhUYRkplN/"

Awww.

Her room has evolved over the last few years...It looked like this after we built the bookcases.

Later on, a little vintage table was added after painting it the same color as the back of the bookcases. The little vintage table was my grandmother's.
I really wish I could show you how the whole room looks today, but you'll have to wait until she tidies it up....
Uh, We might be waiting quite awhile.

How do you get your kids to keep their rooms neat? Do you pick it up or do you leave it to them?
Would love to know where I went wrong!

Vintage Table For The Shabby Chic Bedroom

A couple of days ago I showed you how I transformed the little table from my grandmother's basement. You can see it HERE if you missed it. Here's a little peek at where it's new home is...

The table has a special place in our youngest daughter's bedroom, right next to her chair with the Paris Market pillow.

I put her lamp from Target with the custom shade slipcover I made her last year on it. Not sure if this lamp will stay here since my daughter likes this one on her nightstand.

Here's how the little table looks in the room. It's painted the same color as the bookcases we made(better). If you missed how we took some ugly bookcases we found on Craigslist and transformed them, you can find the post HERE. I think these bookcases are my all time favorite project that we've done.
The backs of the bookcases and the little table are painted in Valspar Nautical in a satin finish.

Here's the lamp that my daughter prefers.  We found it at Ikea on our last trip there.
I've made quite a few things for my daughter's Shabby Chic bedroom in the past couple of years. If you'd like to see them all, just click on "youngest daughter's bedroom" in the labels section on my sidebar.

While you're over on the sidebar, become a follower, if you aren't one already, so you don't miss any of my upcoming projects. You can also follow along on Facebook or Twitter.

Thanks for stopping by,

Transforming Outdated Bookcases From Ugly To Beautiful

Last week the finished bookcases for my youngest daughter's room were revealed.
They came out better than I expected.
The bookcases didn't always look like this...

I love bookcases
They give you a place to display your collections and pretty things and also give to great storage. I was looking for bookcases with shelves on top and closed, hidden storage on the bottom I searched for several months and finally found the perfect ones to transform.

This is what they looked like when we bought them from someone who listed them on Craigslist.
We paid $150 for the pair. Not a bargain, but the doors were solid 5 piece raised panel with applied molding and mitred corners. We don't have the ability to make something so fabulous and to have them made would cost at least $150... or at least that's how I justified spending $150 on two really ugly bookcases.

First off, the bookcases were not as tall as I wanted them to be. I wanted them to be taller than the windows and they needed to be tall enough so that the curtain rods could be installed between them. It would have looked too awkward to add all of the height to the top, so I had Mr. Fanatic build up the bottom of the box. It was going to be covered anyway with furniture base. Here's the bottom before:

The old base molding was removed...

... and an inch and a half was added with a couple of pieces of plywood.

He did the same with the top...

The crown molding was removed

... and the box was built up. I wanted a bead so that the seam between the bookcase and the added height on top wasn't so obvious.

Then a box was added on top of the bead.

Here's looking into the box on the top of the bookcases. Later, Mr. F added a shelf closer to the top so that the lights would sit closer to the top of the crown molding. Crown molding was also added to the top of the box.

After the bookcases were constructed, it was time to prime. It's times like this when I'm so glad we have a basement!

Here's a good look at the top of the bookcase...

After priming, came the paint. We used Valspar Semi-gloss in Brilliant White. The brass hardware was spray painted silver.

If you notice, the crown molding was added so that the bookcases can be used either together or separately against a left and right wall.

At this point, the bookcases  looked pretty good, but I thought that they would look even better with the backs painted a contrasting color. I thought blue would look great, but my daughter picked out a really bright color that I thought might be too "loud", as my mom used to say...

Boy, was I wrong!

After the bookcases were finished, there was still wiring to do. Mr. F had to go into the attic during a couple of really hot days. He was able to bring the cable wire and install a new outlet up through a space between the floors from the attic.
He's so clever.

In order to give the bookcases a built in look, he cut out the baseboards so that the bookcases could fit up against the wall.

I'm going to share a little secret with you... The window is not centered on the wall and the right side is 4" wider. You can't tell because the curtains cover the space.  Gotta love that!

there's a four inch gap

is right up against the casing

So, there you have it:

That's how we transformed two ugly outdated bookcases into beautiful storage!

You can find Bookcase reveal for the whole room  HERE.

P.S. The total cost for these bookcases was around $300. We paid $150 for the bookcases and spent about another $150 on paint, wood, molding, wiring, and lighting.

Pretty Little Project

While gathering accessories to fill my daughter's bookcases, I came across her little dress form that she used to keep necklaces on. The dress form never seemed quite right for her room. When it was purchased,  the body was the color of a brown paper bag. A few months ago, my daughter painted it green to match the green in her room. It still didn't seem right to me.

There was some paint left over after painting the backs of the Bookcases, so I painted the body  aqua  and painted the finial and stand white. It still didn't look right. Burlap to the rescue!
I covered the body with a light burlap I had in my stash of stuff and then added on of my daughter's pretty necklaces.

Perfect!

Now, if I can only come up with something fabulous to hold her other 50 necklaces!

Painted Bookcases ~ Before And After

Woo, hoo!!!

Can you see me jumping up and down because this project is finished???  Ok. truth... We still have a furniture base to put on and a few touch ups, but that doesn't pour a bucket of cold water on my enthusiasm.
I've been wanting to do build some bookcases in our youngest daughter's room for over a year now. More pressing things kept popping up. Then, we had our house on the market for 6 months. After we took our house off the market, this was first up on our list of projects to do.
And now they're finished

Woo Hoo!!!! Yay!

Because Mr. Fanatic is so wonderful and always building things for me, I wanted to make this project a little easier for him. I found some really outdated bookcases on  Craigslist and  thought we could transformed them.
When Mr. F. saw them he wasn't so sure and my daughter was really nice and didn't say they were ugly.
I told them everything would be ok and they would look fabulous... at least, they did in my head.
This is the actual Craigslist photo... (hence, the poor quality)

Here's a closeup of the top...

And a closeup of the gorgeous 5 piece mitered raised panel doors with applied molding. (cabinetry designer nerd alert!)

I will post about how I designed and Mr. Fanatic built these puppies up on another post and the before and after in my daughter's room, but for right now I'm just gonna show you the after....

Drumroll, please..............................................

After we finished painting the bookcases white, I thought it would be fun to paint the backs a contrasting color. My daughter picked out the beautiful color, which is Valspar Nautical. I think it's perfect for her room.
