New Paint For An Extra Bedroom

Our oldest daughter moved to Southern California two years ago this past May and since then, her room has pretty much remained the way it was when she left.
You can read about that day HERE, but I'm warning you that you may need a tissue.

This weekend, we had some time and I was brave enough for a change and decided to get it painted a more neutral color...Mr. F even admitted to getting a little sentimental when he went up to patch a few holes in the wall.

Our oldest daughter's room had been painted Valspar Lucent Purple about a year before she moved.
This is how it was painted when she lived here...You can see more of the details HERE.

Here are  some of the holes that had to be filled before we started painting.

And a few more holes that made Mr. Fanatic wax nostalgic...

We didn't spend any money on paint for this project.
We had 1 gallon of Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter leftover from when we painted the Kitchen and Breakfast Room a couple of years ago. Ben Moore paint is pretty amazing and covered the previously goldish paint in those rooms with one coat, which is why we had a gallon left over.

We weren't sure if the Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter would cover the purple in just one coat, however, and didn't want to chance having to purchase another gallon of paint, so we mixed 3 quarts of samples from Sherwin Williams we had from when I was trying to choose the kitchen paint color.

Here's how the first coat looked:

Here's how the bedroom looks now after a top coat of Revere Pewter:

Not bad for a no cost project! Now I just have to add a little color besides the purple pom poms from Jess' graduation party a few years ago.

Maybe one of these days, I'll find a new home or a new purpose for the armoire that was once Organized. I wish there had been some way to move this out to SoCal with her without having to spend $500 to get it there. She could sure use it now the way it was configured to hold all her makeup and hair supplies.

The bookcase still has a few of her awards in it...Maybe I'll box them up one of  these days too...
The planters and mini tissue pom poms are from both daughter's graduation parties.

sniff sniff.

My, how time flies...

What To Do With An Extra Bedroom

Our oldest daughter moved to Southern California more than a year ago.
We already have a guest room and a bonus room...and a basement, so we really don't need an extra room for anything.
Don't hate me.

Here's what our daughter's room looked like when she lived here, although the floor was covered with all of her clothes.
Just keepin' it real.

Here's what her room looked like when she left. It stayed like this for awhile, then I moved the dresser downstairs to the foyer.

I keep tablecloths, napkins and placemats in the dresser.

I found a new coverlet at HomeGoods and bought a bedskirt online and the extra bedroom looked very plain for a long time.

The dark purple curtains are great for making the room really dark when you want to sleep in, but I wanted to make the room a little brighter without having to paint. Maybe we'll tackle that  project sometime in the future.

I bought some white curtains and hooks from Ikea an put the sheer white up.

I changed out the lamp with one that was in our youngest daughter's room.

Our youngest didn't use her down comforter, so it ended up in this room, as well.
Here's the room after the curtains, comforter and lamp. My daughter's friends always sleep in here when they stay over.
Hope you had a nice weekend.
I think I'm finally getting a little energy back. At least I had a little last night.
It's a good thing because things are really piling up around here.
If you had an extra room in your house, what would you do with it? Would love to know.

Sad Before & After

My oldest daughter's bedroom was my favorite project last year. I guess we started it the year before, but it was pretty much finished last June. I continued working on several projects up until about 6 months ago.

Here's what it looked like all finished...

My daughter chose Lucent Purple by Valspar for her paint color. I wasn't too sure about her choice until we started painting. Once the first bit of paint was rolled on the wall, I loved it.

Here's how it looks today... :.(  tear...
For those of you who are new to my blog; my daughter moved to SoCal last month.
Sammy slept on her bed for two weeks after she left. He used to sleep outside her room against the far wall in the hallway.

We tried very hard to ship her amoire~ (we decked it out as a hair/jewelry/makeup station), but it was just too costly. You can see the inside of it HERE.

She took her artwork and most of her accessories with her, but Mr. Fanatic bought her new lamps in California. She & I weren't  in love with the ones in her room.

This closet was wayyyyyy to small for her. She had over 200 tops and at least 50 pair of shoes! She saw an article once about someone putting their bed in the closet and using the room as the closet and asked if she could do that!
If you'd like to see more of my oldest daughter's former bedroom, you can go HERE.
Not sure what I will do with this room...I already have a large craft room/office, a guest bedroom and have 2nd family room in our basement...ok, don't hate me.
I don't think I could change this room right now anyway. I probably will just buy a new coverlet and put the bedskirt back on.
Would love to hear from all of you who've been through this!

Thanks for stopping by,

Pam

Storage In Plain Sight

My oldest daughter needs a walk in closet the size of her bedroom. She once asked me if her bed would fit in her closet so she could make her bedroom the walk in closet! She saw the idea somewhere on the internet.

The girl also has a few hats...which end up in several places...

I had a drawer front which I put some hooks on that used to be in my design office at work. Here's the perfect place for it...

Perfect!

If you would like to see the rest of her room, just click here.
If any of you know Diana from Diana's
Life, please let her know that she won the CSN giveaway and have her email me. (She didn't leave any way for me to get in touch of her!)

Hope you had a great weekend!

My Favorite Project of 2010

Now that 2010 is coming to a close, I would like to thank all of you for stopping by to see my projects and for all the sweet and encouraging comments! I have also enjoyed visiting all of you and have been AMAZED at all of your talent. You all inspire me! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

My favorite project was a toss up between my youngest daughter's Shabby Chic Coastal bedroom and my oldest daughter's bedroom. I really loved doing both, but we still have to build some bookcases in my youngest daughter's bedroom and my oldest daughter's bedroom is 99% finished. The only thing I want to do in this room is make an upholstered headboard. Soooo, my favorite project is.....
My Oldest Daughter's Bedroom.
My daughter  chose the fabulous paint color and the inspiration for her room started with the black and white pillow I purchased for her bed.

The projects for this room were really fun....From the trivet/placemats I found at HomeGoods (I spray painted the silver ones)...

...to organizing my daughter's armoire (my favorite)...

to the stapled bedskirt...I know...I cheated on this one, but it looks good!

The accessories were easy to find, too.

My daughter loves  the black wire dress form.

The birdcage is cute, too.

Check Another One Off The List

I know, I know, I should finish decorating the house for Christmas. But, I am on a mission to finish the last remaining projects in my oldest daughter's room.

In the past few weeks, I showed you how we organized her armoire...

How I  made some artwork for above her bed...

and how I organized a messy corner in her room...
But, I hadn't gotten to making a bedskirt. I have been sewing since I was a teenager, but I really don't like to, so procrastination for this project was my best friend. I had purchased a couple of window panels that matched the ones in my daughter's room last spring, but hadn't even cut the fabric since the bed hadn't been raised at that time. Several weeks ago, another blogger posted about how she made a bedskirt by hot gluing some fabric onto the box spring , which was an "aha" moment for me. Instead of hot gluing, I used.....

...a staple gun! I folded the fabric over so the rough edge was tucked under and stapled the fabric to the wood slats.

I just used the length of an 84" panel for each side. I cut both long sides out of one panel. No sewing for these two sides since I used the outside parts of the panels that were already sewn.

I did have some sewing to do for the panel for the end of the bed. I cut the piece at a slight angle (wider at the bottom) so that it would lay better.

Here's how it looks at the foot of the bed, looking toward the right side of the bed.

Yay! The metal bed frame and all the containers under the bed are covered up!

Before the bedskirt...(and artwork)

After the bedskirt and artwork....

My last project will be making a headboard, but I don't think that will be until after Christmas!
Thanks for stopping by!
