Full overlay cabinet styles require a bit more work when installing crown molding.
Yep, that's just what Mr. DIY needs - more work.
With full overlay door styles, crown molding can't be nailed to the front of the cabinet because there's not enough space. It's a simple solution, but not an easy fix...
I remember from my days as a kitchen designer, that my installers just added an extra piece of wood to the top of the cabinet - to which the crown is nailed to, but not seen.
Mr. DIY used scrap wood and nailed it to the top of the cabinet.
Crown molding can now be nailed to the front piece of the scrap wood.
With cabinets with face frames (as opposed to European style cabinets), the face frame sticks our past the side of the cabinet about 3/16" of an inch. Sometimes a 3/16" cabinet skin is applied to the end; sometimes not. We didn't add skins to the sides of the refrigerator cabinet or the side of the wall cabinet. This means that there will be a little sliver of the unpainted piece of wood that will show through once the crown is added. You can use a finished filler or it can be touched up later. That's what we'll do.
Here are the cabinets before the crown molding is installed.
Here's how we left it - holes filled with wood filler... When we go back up to the Mountain Cottage, we'll be doing some touch up.
That's how you install crown molding on full overlay cabinetry!
It's only been 3 years since we started working on the Kitchen, but we're finally nearing completion!

I'm so excited to be nearing the end. At least now, the kitchen is wonderful to use and looks pretty, even though there are still a few projects to do.
Hope today is a good day for you!

Just made them…helpful! I added some thin ca-board and we loved them! Thanks for the idea!
