Fall Mantel 2020

We've had a lovely Fall in the Carolinas. The weather cooled off quickly at the beginning of September.  The uncomfortable humidity that plagues the South during the summer disappeared and cool nights returned. It even was cool enough to turn the fireplace on one night.

So wonderful.

We also turned the heat on a couple of weeks ago, both at our mountain cottage and at the home we live in. 

The weather has turned a bit warmer, without the humidity... being from southern California, I call it "California weather"....temps in the 70s-80 degrees, with low humidity... The best weather of the year  along with  early Spring. We'll be enjoying this open your doors and windows weather until next Thursday...

 then it's suppose to turn cooler into the 60s and it will be time to break out the extra blankets and throws and cuddle up.

This week Mr. DIY brought up a few Fall decorations and I set them out on the mantel . 

The Autumn banner will be out until the weather turns cool next week and the fireplace will once again be warming us on cooler evening.

Fall means breaking out seasonal pillows...

...and of course, little white pumpkins and a colorful Fall garland.

 

We'll be heading up to our mountain cottage in a few days. The landscape was turning, but peak colors hadn't reached our elevation, and I hope they will when we are up there. You just never know.

Happy Fall 2020

Happy Fall Everyone!

I think we're going to have normal Fall weather  here in the Carolinas this year (crossing fingers).

The heat and humidity turned off a few weeks ago and now we're enjoying warm sunshine with cool breezes.

Cooler weather makes for gorgeous Fall colors. I'm hoping to see the trees at our mountain cottage turning  vibrant oranges, reds and yellows. This photo was taken a few months after we bought our cozy cottage in early Fall of 2013. 

Every year since then, I have been chasing this photo, but the colors have never rivaled the ones in this pic. One year kids were wearing short sleeves on Halloween. Another year we had very little rain. Heat and lack of rain aren't the ingredients needed for spectacular Fall colors.

The copious amounts of rain we've had in 2020 and the weather cooling off on time at the end of August, should produce fabulous Fall colors.

Then, of course, we have to be at our mountain house when peak color hits.

Some Fall porches have been my favorite. The one shown below was one of those, but as I recall, I was sweating as I was decorating it for Fall. You can read about it HERE.

The Screened Porch at the house we live in is the perfect place to spread a little Fall. This space is a great place to sit and relax or eat a dinner when the weather is nice. You can seen more of our Fall Screened Porch HERE. 

A simple Fall craft with supplies you might already have around the house is a good way to decorate without having to spend any money, especially if money is tight this year.  You can see that post HERE.

Setting a pretty Fall table is also a festive way to refresh the house for the Autumn season. Gather things you already have around the house, and if you have kids, let them decorate the table every day. You can find more pics of this tablescape HERE.

Autumn Mantel

It’s been awhile since I made a good effort to decorate our mantel.
The last time was Christmas.



Oh, I put up some decorations for Valentines day, Spring and Summer, but I didn’t really go all out.
Since I only have one storage tote of Fall decorations, I ordered several things.
This year I really wanted a pretty Fall banner, and if you stopped by last time, I showed you how I made it.

I already had quite a few supplies: clock, burlap ribbon, the supplies for the banner, candle holders, wreath, wheat and votives.

The banner turned out well and was simple to make.

Fall Mantel

          Happy Fall y'all!     

         

Just had to say that since it rhymes and all.

I've lived in the South now for 13 years and have learned to appreciate a few of their good words.

So, the Summers in the South...hmmmmm,

not a fan.

humidity just saps my energy.

Hence the need for a little cottage in the mountains, where the weather is just a tad cooler.

Fall in the South, however, is a glorious thing.

Cool nights, warm days...

Leaves change colors and create a gorgeous landscape.

Especially in the North Carolina mountains.

(another reason for a little cottage in the mountains)

Having lived in Southern California for 40 years, where there is no Fall at all,

 I just never appreciated the season. 

I also did not decorate for Fall and therefore,  have hardly any Fall decorations.

(I know I've lived in North Carolina for 13 years, but I'm a slow learner)

Makes it difficult to decorate for Fall now that I appreciate the season more.

My mission was to decorate my mantel without buying

 ANYTHING.

(ya know, because I'm saving all my pennies for the reno of the little cottage)

I gathered some things from my ONE box of Fall decorations and some pretty things from around the house and this is what I came up with:

The green moss I collected in the woods behind our home and put in the bronze urns has turned a beautiful deep golden brown and is perfect for Fall. (Here's how I made them.)

I almost threw the moss covered styrofoam away and was going to start over with some fresh green moss. 

So glad I didn't.

 

 I made the Fall banner out of some leftover burlap and some ribbon I had in my craft room. 

Now that the mantel is finished, I'm off to decorate the Breakfast Room.

Maybe I should take a walk in the woods for more free things to decorate with.

Fall Mantel

I hope you are having a great week! How's the weather where you are? Has it cooled off yet? We're still having some pretty humid days here in the South and haven't been able to wear long sleeves yet. But, this weekend it supposed to get cooler. I am hoping to have a fire out on our patio in the woods. Definitely one of the joys of Fall

This is my first Fall mantel in our Family Room since moving the tv out of the niche.

I love the warm glow of my simple burlap wrapped votives.

I kept the iron artwork against the burlap as the backdrop. The pumpkins are on cake stands so that they can be seen above the floral garland.

Everything on the mantel and in the niche is something I already had.
